Galatians 1

Galatians Chapter 1

Galatians 1:1: Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)

apostle – apostolos {ap-os’-tol-os} from apostello ( {ap-os-tel’-lo} set apart, i.e. (by implication) to send out (properly, on a mission) literally or figuratively:–put in, send (away, forth, out), set (at liberty).) a delegate; specially, an ambassador of the Gospel; officially a commissioner of Christ (“apostle”) (with miraculous powers):– apostle, messenger, he that is sent.

Luke 6:13: And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;

Man = anthropos {anth’-ro-pos} from aner {an’-ayr};( a man (properly as an individual
male):–fellow, husband, man, sir. ) and ops (the countenance); man-faced, i.e. a human being:–certain, man.

Found also in Galatians 2:6, 2:16, 3:12, 3:15, 5:3, 6:1, and 6:7.

raised = egeiro {eg-i’-ro} (through the idea of collecting one’s faculties); to waken (transitively or intransitively), i.e. rouse (literally, from sleep, from sitting or lying, from disease, from death; or figuratively, from obscurity, inactivity, ruins, nonexistence):–awake, lift (up), raise (again, up), rear up, (a-)rise (again, up),stand, take up.

Dead = = nekros {nek-ros’} from an apparently primary nekus (a corpse); dead (literally or figuratively; also as noun):–dead.

Acts 13:30: But God raised him from the dead:

Acts 17:31: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Romans 10:9: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Ephesians 1:20: Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

Colossians 2:12: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Paul is telling us that his apostleship is not ordained by men. He is an apostle only because of the work of Jesus Christ on the cross and in his life. He goes into further detail about this later in this chapter.

Galatians 1:2: And all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia:

Brethern = adephos {ad-el-fos’} from a (as a connective particle) and delphus (the womb); a
brother (literally or figuratively) near or remote:–brother.

churches = ekklesia {ek-klay-See’-ah}; a calling out, i.e. (concretely) a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation (Jewish synagogue, or Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both):–assembly, church.

Found also in Galatians 1:13 and 1:22

This shows that Paul was writing in agreement with other men that were with him. He never names those men, but he is telling the Galatians that he is coming with church authority and not just writing on his own. The churches of Galatia show that this letter was not to just one church but several. Antioch of Pisidia, Iconium, Lystra and Derbe are mentioned as some of the churches of Galatia. These churches were mainly made up of gentiles. (Galatians 4:8 “Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.”)

Galatians 1:3: Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,

grace = charis {khar’-ece} from chairo ( {khah’-ee-ro} a primary verb; to be “cheer”ful, i.e. calmly happy or well-off; impersonally, especially as salutation (on meeting or parting), be well:–farewell, be glad, God speed, greeting, hall, joy(- fully), rejoice.); graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude):–acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace(- ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank(-s, -worthy).

Found also in Galatians 1:6, 2:9, 2:21,6:18.

While “grace to you and peace” recall the normal Greek and Hebrew greetings. Paul basically coined a slight variation to connote the deepened Christian truth of grace. Charis (“grace”) goes beyond the typical chairein (“greetings”; see Acts 15:23; 23:26; James 1:1). By doing this he placed the focus on the unmerited blessings given to believers in Christ. Through God’s marvelous grace sinners are delivered from their sins and brought into a saving relationship with a holy God by the work of God on their behalf completely free of charge. This grace does not cease with salvation from sin’s penalty, but continues on as the foundation of the believer’s life with God throughout all eternity. These blessings of grace Paul and his associates wish for their readers.

peace = eirene {i-ray’-nay} probably from a primary verb eiro (to join); peace (literally or
figuratively); by implication, prosperity:–one, peace, quietness, rest, + set at one again.

Found also in Galatians 6:16.

Galatians 1:4: Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

Sins = hamartia {ham-ar-tee’-ah} from hamartano {ham-ar-tan’-o}; properly, to miss the mark (and so not share in the prize), i.e. (figuratively) to err, especially (morally) to sin:–for your faults, offend, sin, trespass.; a sin (properly abstract):–offence, sin(-ful).
