EPHESIANS

CHAPTER SIX

Ephesians 6:1: Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

Children = teknon {tek’-non}; a child (as produced):–child, daughter, son.

Obey = hupakouo {hoop-ak-oo’-o}; to hear under (as a subordinate), i.e. to listen attentively; by implication, to heed or conform to a command or authority:–hearken, be obedient to, obey.

Colossians 3:20: Children, obey [your] parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

Parents = goneus {gon-yooce’} a parent:–parent.

Right = dikaios {dik’-ah-yos from dike {dee’-kay}; right (as self-evident), i.e. justice (the
principle, a decision, or its execution):–judgment, punish, vengeance.; equitable (in character or act); by implication,innocent, holy (absolutely or relatively):–just, meet, right(-eous).

Colossians 4:1: Masters, give unto [your] servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

Ephesians 6:2: Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

Honour = timao {tim-ah’-o} from timios tim’-ee-os, including the {comparative} timioteros tim-ee-o’-ter-os, and the superlative timiotatos tim-ee-o’-tat-os from time {tee-may’} from tino tee’-no, strengthened for a {primary} tio tee’-o (which is only used as an alternative in certain tenses) to pay a price, i.e. as a penalty:–be punished with.; a value, i.e. money paid, or (concretely and collectively) valuables; by analogy, esteem (especially of the highest degree), or the dignity itself:–honour, precious, price, some. ; valuable, i.e. (objectively) costly, or (subjectively) honored, esteemed, or (figuratively) beloved:–dear, honourable, (more, most) precious, had in reputation. ; to prize, i.e. fix a valuation upon; by implication, to reveRevelation –honour, value.

Matthew 15:4: (Mark 7:10)For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

Matthew 15:8: (Mark 7:7)This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

Matthew 19:19: (Mark 10:19)Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

John 5:23: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

Father = pater {pat-ayr’} apparently a primary word; a “father” (literally or figuratively,
near or more remote):–father, parent.

Mother = meter {may’-tare} apparently a primary word; a “mother” (literally or figuratively,
immediate or remote):–mother.

First = protos {pro’-tos}; foremost (in time, place, order or importance):–before, beginning, best, chief(-est), first (of all), former.

Commandment = entole {en-tol-ay’} from entellomai {en-tel’-lom-ahee} ; to enjoin:–
(give) charge, (give) command(-ments), injoin. ; injunction, i.e. an authoritative prescription:–
commandment, precept.

Promise = epaggelia {ep-ang-el-ee’-ah} from epaggello {ep-ang-el’-lo}; to announce upon
(reflexively), i.e. (by implication) to engage to do something, to assert something respecting oneself:–profess, (make) promise. ; an announcement (for information, assent or pledge; especially a divine assurance of good):–message, promise.

Ephesians 6:3: That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Well = eu {yoo} neuter of a primary eus (good); (adverbially) well:–good, well (done).

Matthew 25:20-23 20: And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. 21: His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 22: He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. 23: His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

Mark 14:6-7 6: And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. 7: For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.

Luke 19:17: And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.

Acts 15:29: That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

mayest – esomai {es’-om-ahee}; will be:–shall (should) be (have), (shall)come (to pass), X may have, X fall, what would follow, X live long, X sojourn.
live long – makrochronios {mak-rokh-ron’-ee-os}; long-timed, i.e.long-lived:–live long.

Earth = ge {ghay} contracted from a primary word; soil; by extension a region, or the solid part or the whole of the terrene globe (including the occupants in each application):–country, earth(-ly), ground, land, world.

Ephesians 6:4: And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Fathers = pater {pat-ayr’} apparently a primary word; a “father” (literally or figuratively,
near or more remote):–father, parent.

Provoke to wrath = parorgizo {par-org-id’-zo}; to anger alongside, i.e. enrage:–anger, provoke to wrath.

Romans 10:19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.

Children = teknon {tek’-non}; a child (as produced):–child, daughter, son.

Bring up = ektrepho {ek-tref’-o} ; to rear up to maturity, i.e. (genitive case) to cherish or train:–bring up, nourish.

nurture – paideia {pahee-di’-ah} (from paideuo {pahee-dyoo’-o}; to train up a child, i.e. educate, or (by implication), discipline (by punishment):–chasten(-ise), instruct, learn, teach.; from pais {paheece}; a boy (as often beaten with impunity), or (by analogy), a girl, and (genitive case) a child; specially, a slave or servant (especially a minister to a king; and by eminence to God):–child, maid(-en), (man) servant, son, young man.) tutorage, i.e. education or training; by implication, disciplinary correction:–chastening, chastisement, instruction, nurture.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Hebrews 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

Hebrews 12:7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

Hebrews 12:8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

Hebrews 12;11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Admonition – nouthesia {noo-thes-ee’-ah}; calling attention to, i.e. (by implication) mild rebuke or warning:–admonition.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Titus 3:10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;

Ephesians 6:5: Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

servants – doulos {doo’-los} from deo {deh’-o} a primary verb; to bind (in various applications, literally or figuratively):–bind, be in bonds, knit, tie, wind; a slave (literal or figurative, involuntary or
voluntary; frequently, therefore in a qualified sense of subjection or subserviency):– bond(-man), servant.

be obedient = see obey in Ephesians 6:1

Colossians 3:22: Servants, obey in all things [your] masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

masters – kurios {koo’-ree-os} from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as
noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):– God, Lord, master, Sir.

Flesh – sarx {sarx}; flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e. (strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or (by extension) the body (as opposed to the soul (or spirit), or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or (by implication) human nature (with its frailties (physically or morally) and passions), or (specially), a human being (as such):–carnal(-ly, + -ly minded), flesh(-ly).

fear = phobos {fob’-os} from a primary phebomai (to be put in fear); alarm or fright:– be afraid, + exceedingly, fear, terror.

Trembling – tromos {trom’-os} from tremo {trem’-o} strengthened from a primary treo (to “dread”, “terrify”); to “tremble” or fear:–be afraid, trembling.; a “trembling”, i.e. quaking with fear:–+ tremble(-
ing).

Mark 5:33: But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

Luke 8:47: And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.

Acts 9:6: And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

Acts 16:29: Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,

1 Corinthians 2:3: And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

2 Corinthians 7:15: And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.

Philippians 2:12: Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Singleness – haplotes {hap-lot’-ace} from haplous {hap-looce’}; properly, folded together, i.e. single (figuratively, clear):–single.; singleness, i.e. (subjectively) sincerity (without dissimulation or self-Seeking), or (objectively) generosity (copious bestowal):– bountifulness, liberal(-ity), simplicity, singleness.

Acts 2:46: And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

Colossians 3:22: Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

heart = kardia {kar-dee’-ah} prolonged from a primary kar (Latin cor, “heart”); the heart, i.e. (figuratively) the thoughts or feelings (mind); also (by analogy) the middle:–(+broken-)heart(-ed).

Ephesians 6:6: Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

eyeservice – ophthalmodouleia {of-thal-mod-oo-li’-ah}; sight-labor, i.e. that needs watching (remissness):–eye-service.

Colossians 3:22: Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

menpleasers = anthropareskos {anth-ro-par’-es-kos}; man-courting, i.e. fawning:–men-pleaser.

doing – poieo {poy-eh’-o} apparently a prolonged form of an obsolete primary; to make

Will = thelema {thel’-ay-mah} from thelo ({thel’-o} or ethelo eth-el’-o, in certain tenses theleo thel-eh’-o, and etheleo eth-el-eh’-o, which are otherwise obsolete by implication, to wish, i.e. be inclined to (sometimes adverbially, gladly); impersonally for the future tense, to be about to; by Hebraism, to delight in:–desire, be disposed (forward), intend, list, love, mean, please, have rather, (be) will (have, -ling, – ling(-ly)).) a determination (properly, the thing), i.e. (actively) choice (specially, purpose, decree; abstractly, volition) or (passively) inclination:– desire, pleasure, will.

Ephesians 6:7: With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:

good will eunoia {yoo’-noy-ah}; kindness; euphemistically, conjugal duty:–benevolence, good will.

1 Corinthians 7:3: Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.

doing service = douleuo {dool-yoo’-o} from doulos; to be a slave to (literal or figurative,
involuntary or voluntary):–be in bondage, (do) serve(-ice).

Ephesians 6:8: Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.

Knowing = eido {i’-do} a primary verb; properly, to See (literally or figuratively); by implication, (in the perfect tense only) to know:–be aware, behold, X can (+ not tell), consider, (have) know(-ledge), look (on), perceive, See, be sure, tell, understand, wish, wot.

Forbearing = aniemi {an-ee’-ay-mee} from hiemi (to send); to let up, i.e. (literally)
slacken or (figuratively) desert, desist from:–forbear, leave, loose.

Acts 16:26: And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

Acts 27:40: And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoised up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.

Hebrews 13:5: Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Threatening = apeileo {ap-i-leh’-o} of uncertain derivation; to menace; by implication, to forbid:-
-threaten.

Acts 4;17 But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.

Acts 9:1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

Master = same as masters

heaven = ouranos {oo-ran-os’} perhaps from the same as 3735 (through the idea of elevation); the sky; by extension, heaven (as the abode of God); by implication, happiness, power, eternity; specially, the Gospel (Christianity):–air, heaven(-ly), sky.

Respect of persons = prosopolepsia {pros-o-pol-ape-See’-ah} from prosopoleptes {pros-o-pol-ape’-tace}; an accepter of a face (individual), i.e. (specially), one exhibiting partiality:–respecter of persons. ; partiality, i.e. favoritism:–respect of persons.

Romans 2:11: For there is no respect of persons with God.

Ephesians 6:10: Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Finally = loipon {loy-pon’} neuter singular of leipo {li’-po} a primary verb; to leave, i.e. (intransitively or passively) to fail or be absent:–be destitute (wanting), lack. ; something remaining
(adverbially):–besides, finally, furthermore, (from) henceforth, moreover, now, + it remaineth, then.

Brethern = adephos {ad-el-fos’} from a (as a connective particle) and delphus (the womb); a
brother (literally or figuratively) near or remote (much like 1):–brother.

Strong = endunamoo {en-doo-nam-o’-o} ; to empower:–enable, (increase in) strength(-en), be (make) strong.

Acts 9:22 But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.

Romans 4:20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

1 Timothy 1:12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

power = kratos {krat’-os} perhaps a primary word; vigor (“great”) (literally or figuratively):–dominion, might(-ily), power, strength. See Ephesians 1:19

Luke 1:51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

1 Timothy 6:16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

Might = ischus {is-khoos’} from a derivative of is (force; compare eschon); forcefulness (literally or figuratively):–ability, might(-ily), power, strength.

Ephesians 6:11: Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Put on = enduo {en-doo’-o} (sinking into a garment); to invest with clothing (literally or figuratively):–array, clothe (with), endue, have (put) on. See Ephesians 4:24

whole armour = panoplia {pan-op-lee’-ah} from hoplon {hop’-lon} probably from a primary hepo (to be busy about); an implement or utensil or tool (literally or figuratively, especially, offensive for war):– armour, instrument, weapon; full armor (“panoply”):–all (whole) armour.

Luke 11:22: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

may be able = dunamai {doo’-nam-ahee} of uncertain affinity; to be able or possible:–be able,
can (do, + -not), could, may, might, be possible, be of power.

Stand = histemi {his’-tay-mee} a prolonged form of a primary stao stah’-o (of the same meaning, and used for it in certain tenses); to stand (transitively or intransitively), used in various applications (literally or figuratively):–abide, appoint, bring, continue, covenant, establish, hold up, lay, present, set (up), stanch, stand (by, forth, still, up).

against = pros {pros; a preposition of direction; forward to, i.e. toward (with the genitive case, the side of, i.e. pertaining to; with the dative case, by the side of, i.e. near to; usually with the accusative case, the place, time, occasion, or respect, which is the destination of the relation, i.e. whither or for which it is predicated):–about, according to , against, among, at, because of, before, between, (where-)by, for, X at thy house, in, for intent, nigh unto, of, which pertain to, that, to (the end that), X together, to (you) -ward, unto, with(-in). In the comparative case, it denotes
essentially the same applications, namely, motion towards, accession to, or nearness to

wiles = methodeia {meth-od-i’-ah}; travelling over, i.e. travesty (trickery):–wile, lie in wait. Only here and in 4:14

Devil = diabolos {dee-ab’-ol-os} from diaballo {dee-ab-al’-lo}; (figuratively) to traduce:–accuse. ; a traducer; specially, Satan :–false accuser, devil, slanderer.

Ephesians 6:12: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wrestle = pale {pal’-ay} from pallo (to vibrate); wrestling:–+ wrestle.
