Ephesians 3

EPHESIANS 3

Ephesians 3:1: For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,

prisoner = desmios {des’-mee-os} from desmon {des-mon’} or desmos des-mos neuter and masculine respectively; a band, i.e. ligament (of the body) or shackle (of a prisoner); figuratively, animpediment or disability:–band, bond, chain, string; a captive (as bound):–in bonds, prisoner.

Prisoner (desmios) is found in the following verses.

Ephesians 4:1: I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

Colossians 4:10: Aristarchus my fellow prisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister’s son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;)

2 Timothy1:8: Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
Philemon1:1: Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellow labourer,
Philemon1:9: Yet for love’s sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
Philemon1:23: There salute thee Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus;

According to biblical sources and biblical scholarship, Paul was likely in prison from between five and six years’ total. He was probably imprisoned in Rome at least two years around AD 60-62. His other two-year stay was in Caesarea and counting his additional Book of Act’s experiences, we think Paul’s total time in prison was possibly as long as six years but this gave him the opportunity to speak before his accusers, to the Roman guards, to the prisoners, and as any opportunity afforded him (Acts 28:16), being permitted to receive visitors (Acts 28:30), and having opportunities to share the gospel (Acts 28:31) with anyone he had contact with. The authorities and the Jewish leaders meant it for evil but God used Paul’s time in prison for good. Paul’s imprisonment was a result of his preaching the gospel to the Gentiles. Here he is stating that fact.

Ephesians 3:2: If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:

dispensation = oikonomia {oy-kon-om-ee’-ah} from oikonomos {oy-kon-om’-os}(; a house-distributor (i.e. manager), or overSeer, i.e. an employee in that capacity; by extension, a fiscal agent (treasurer); figuratively, a preacher (of the Gospel):–chamberlain, governor, steward. ); administration (of a household or estate); specially, a (religious) “economy”:–dispensation, stewardship. See Ephesians 1:10 for more on this word.

Paul was given a ministry by the Holy Spirit to bring the teaching of grace to the Gentiles. This was his life work, and this was why he was in prison.           1 Corinthians 3:10-11, Paul writes:“[10] According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. [11] But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” It is by faith in the Gospel of Grace that one enters into the Body of Christ. Who laid the foundation of the Christian faith in this Dispensation of Grace? The Bible says that it was PAUL! Please understand that Jesus Christ is the Foundation, but the Holy Spirit claims that Paul is the “wise masterbuilder” (chief architect) who laid the Foundation—the Foundation is Jesus Christ and Him crucified for our sins, buried, and risen again for our justification.
