Ephesians 2:1: And you {hath he quickened}, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

hath he quickened = not in the Greek

dead = nekros {nek-ros’} from an apparently primary nekus (a corpse); dead (literally
or figuratively; also as noun):–dead.

Ephesians 2:5: Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

Colossians 2:13: And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

trespasses = paraptoma {par-ap’-to-mah} from parapipto ({par-ap-ip’-to} to fall aside, i.e. (figuratively) to apostatize:–fall away. ); a side-slip (lapse or deviation), i.e.(unintentional) error or (wilful) transgression:–fall, fault, offence, sin, trespass.

Matthew 6:14: For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

Matthew 6:15: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 18:35: So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Mark 11:25: And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

Mark 11:26: But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

2 Corinthians 5:19: To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Sin = hamartia {ham-ar-tee’-ah} from hamartano {ham-ar-tan’-o}; properly, to miss the mark (and so not share in the prize), i.e. (figuratively) to err, especially (morally) to sin:–for your faults, offend, sin, trespass. ; a sin (properly abstract):–offence, sin(-ful).

Trespasses and sin are what cause death, both spiritual and physical.

Ephesians 2:2: Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

time past = pote {pot-eh’}; indefinite adverb, at some time, ever:–afore-(any, some-)time(-s), at length (the last), (+ n- )ever, in the old time, in time past, once, when.

Ephesians 2:11: Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

1 Peter 2:10: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

1 Peter 4:3: For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

walked = peripateo {per-ee-pat-eh’-o}; to tread all around, i.e. walk at large (especially as proof of ability); figuratively, to live, deport oneself, follow (as a companion or votary):–go, be occupied with, walk (about).

2 Corinthians 10:2: But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.

1 Peter 4:3: For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

course = aion {ahee-ohn’}; properly, an age; by extension, perpetuity (also past); by implication, the world; specially (Jewish) a Messianic period (present or future):–age, course, eternal, (for) ever(-more), (n-)ever, (beginning of the , while the) world (began, without end).

Prince = archon {ar’-khone} present participle of archo {ar’-kho} a primary verb; to be first (in political rank or power):–reign (rule) over.; a first (in rank or power):–chief (ruler), magistrate, prince, ruler.

Power = exousia {ex-oo-See’-ah}; privilege, i.e.(subjectively) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (objectively) mastery (concretely, magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of control), delegated influence:–authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength.

Ephesians 3:10: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly [places] might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

Ephesians 6:12: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].

Colossians 1:13: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated [us] into the kingdom of his dear Son:

Colossians 1:16: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him :

Colossians 2:10: And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Titus 3:1: Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

Air = aer {ah-ayr’} from aemi (to breathe unconsciously, i.e. respire; by analogy, to
blow); “air” (as naturally circumambient):–air.

Revelation 9:2: And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

Spirit = pneuma {pnyoo’-mah}; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ’s spirit, the Holy Spirit:–ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind.

Worketh = energeo {en-erg-eh’-o} from energes {en-er-gace’}; active, operative:–effectual,
powerful. ; to be active, efficient:–do, (be) effectual (fervent), be mighty in, shew forth self, work (effectually in).

Children = teknon {tek’-non}; a child (as produced):–child, daughter, son.

Disobedience = apeitheia {ap-i’-thi-ah} from apeithes {ap-i-thace’}; unpersuadable,
i.e. contumacious:–disobedient. ; disbelief (obstinate and rebellious):–
disobedience, unbelief.

Ephesians 5:6: Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

Colossians 3:6: For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

Hebrews 2:2: For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

Trespasses and sin not only produce death, but also produce works of the devil. That is the devil gets control of the lives of men through the trespasses and sin. He works in them to produce his plans and purposes. Every time we enter into sin and tresspasses, we open the door to the devil, the prince of the power of the air. The deed of sin becomes a walk of sin. And then in verse three it becomes a lifestyle.

Ephesians 2:3: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Conversation = anastrepho {an-as-tref’-o}; to overturn; also to return; by implication, to busy oneself, i.e. remain, live:–abide, behave self, have conversation, live, overthrow, pass, return, be used.

Galatians 1:13: For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:

Ephesians 4:22: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

Philippians 1:27: Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

Philippians 3:20: For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

lusts = epithumia {ep-ee-thoo-mee’-ah} from epithumeo {ep-ee-thoo-meh’-o}; to set the heart upon, i.e. long for (rightfully or otherwise):–covet, desire, would fain, lust (after). ; a longing (especially for what is forbidden):–concupiscence, desire, lust (after).

Flesh = sarx {sarx}; flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e. (strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or (by extension) the body (as opposed to the soul (or spirit), or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or (by implication) human nature (with its frailties (physically or morally) and passions), or (specially), a human being (as such):–carnal(-ly, + -ly minded), flesh(-ly).

Romans 6:12: Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Romans 13:14: But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Galatians 5:16: This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 5:17: For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Galatians 5:24: And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Titus 3:3: For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

James 1:14-15: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

1 Peter 2:11: Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

1 Peter 4:2: That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

2 Peter 2:10: But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

2 Peter 2:18: For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.

2 Peter 3:3: Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

1 John 2:16: For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

1 John 2:17: And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Fulfilling = poieo {poy-eh’-o}; to make or do (in a very wide application, more or less direct):–abide, + agree, appoint, X avenge, + band together, be, bear, + bewray, bring (forth), cast out, cause, commit, + content, continue, deal, + without any delay, (would) do(-ing), execute, exercise, fulfil, gain, give, have, hold, X journeying, keep, + lay wait, + lighten the ship, make, X mean, + none of these things move me, observe, ordain, perform, provide, + have purged, purpose, put, + raising up, X secure, shew, X shoot out, spend, take, tarry, + transgress the law, work, yield.

Desires = thelema {thel’-ay-mah}; a determination (properly, the thing), i.e. (actively) choice (specially, purpose, decree; abstractly, volition) or (passively) inclination:– desire, pleasure, will.

Mind = dianoia {dee-an’-oy-ah}; deep thought, properly, the faculty (mind or its disposition), by implication, its exercise:– imagination, mind, understanding.

The lifestyle starts with lusts of the flesh and then progress to desires of the flesh and mind. One must first set your heart on something, and then make a choice to do it. At first the body, or flesh is involved, and then the body and mind are both involved. It is important to stop the lusts so they do not grow into a desire that takes over the mind. That is why it is so important to renew the mind, so that the flesh cannot get the control. Either the flesh controls your thoughts or the spirit controls your thoughts. We must be spirit controlled. Romans explains this perfectly.

Romans:8:1-14: There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.2: For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.3: For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.5: For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.6: For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.:7: Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.8: So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.9: But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.10: And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.11: But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.12: Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.13: For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
14: For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

nature = phusis {foo’-sis from phuo {foo’-o} a primary verb; probably originally, to “puff” or blow, i.e. to swell up; but only used in the implied sense, to germinate or grow (sprout, produce), literally

Romans 2:14: For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

Romans 2:27: And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?

Ephesians 6:4: And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

James 1:20: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

Because of the nature of the sinner, they receive and produce wrath. The end product of the sin nature is the wrath of God.

Ephesians 2:4: But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

rich = plousios {ploo’-See-os} from ploutos {ploo’-tos}; wealth (as fulness), i.e. (literally)
money, possessions, or (figuratively) abundance, richness, (specially), valuable bestowment:–riches.

Mercy = eleos {el’-eh-os} of uncertain affinity; compassion (human or divine, especially

Romans 15:9: And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.

Hebrews 4:16: Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

loved = agapao {ag-ap-ah’-o} perhaps from agan (much) ; to love (in a social or moral sense):–(be-)love(-ed).

God’s love is shown in John 3:16-17 : For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. It is a great love, and not only gives salvation, but all our needs. As Romans says in 8:32: He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

Ephesians 2:5: Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

hath quickened together with = suzoopoieo {sood-zo-op-oy-eh’-o} ; to reanimate conjointly with (figuratively):–quicken together with.

Colossians 2:13: And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

God’s work in us brought us back to life from a life dead in sin. The work happened even while we were dead in sin. God did the work in our lives way back when Jesus was raised from the dead. We were raised with him. This grace saved us. It is not anything we have done, but all Jesus did. We were made alive with him at the resurrection. If Jesus was not resurrected we could not have been risen from the death of sin. But because he was raised from the dead, we are also. It is an accomplished fact. We no longer have to live in sin, and with a sin-consciousness because Jesus freed us from that.

saved = sozo {sode’-zo} from a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saos, “safe”); to
save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):–heal, preserve, save (self), do well,

Romans 10:9: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

We are not only made alive, but raised and caused to be seated with Christ in the heavenlies. God sees us in Jesus. Everytime he looks at Jesus, he sees us. Every time he looks at us he sees Jesus. It is the same with the devil. That is why he hates the church so. We are the body of Christ. We are to do his works because we have his authority. We have already won over the devil and his works! We are seated in heavenly places. We are in authority, because of the work of Jesus.

Ephesians 2:7: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

The riches of his grace not only includes salvation, but every need we may have. God lavishes on his family all the riches of heaven, not only now but also in the future. The kindness of Jesus is the key. He is why we have the grace given to us. We don’t deserve it. It is what Jesus deserved, but he took our problems so we could have his riches.

Ephesians 2:8: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

We cannot boast, because it is a gift. We cannot work toward our salvation, because while we were dead in sin, Christ died for us. It is a gift of God’s grace. Our little works are impossible to save us. We must receive that gift in faith. There is nothing we can do to earn that gift, therefore we cannot boast in how we received it.

We are his workmanship. Therefore the works we do must be with his help. If we are working on our own after salvation to gain his approval, they are useless works. But if we are relying totally on God, and doing what the Holy Spirit directs us to do, he will give us the means and ability to do what he has instructed us. It is an easy walk because he ordained, planned the walk before we begin it. All we have to do is follow the path that he has built for us.

At the end of the first century B.C., the Romans adopted crucifixion as an official punishment for non-Romans for certain limited transgressions. Initially, it was employed not as a method of execution, but only as a punishment. Moreover, only slaves convicted of certain crimes were punished by crucifixion. During this early period, a wooden beam, known as a furca or patibulum was placed on the slave’s neck and bound to his arms. …When the procession arrived at the execution site, a vertical stake was fixed into the ground. Sometimes the victim was attached to the cross only with ropes. In such a case, the patibulum or crossbeam, to which the victim’s arms were already bound, was simply affixed to the vertical beam; the victim’s feet were then bound to the stake with a few turns of the rope.
If the victim was attached by nails, he was laid on the ground, with his shoulders on the crossbeam. His arms were held out and nailed to the two ends of the crossbeam, which was then raised and fixed on top of the vertical beam. The victim’s feet were then nailed down against this vertical stake.
In order to prolong the agony, Roman executioners devised two instruments that would keep the victim alive on the cross for extended periods of time. One, known as a sedile, was a small seat attached to the front of the cross, about halfway down. This device provided some support for the victim’s body and may explain the phrase used by the Romans, “to sit on the cross.” Both Eraneus and Justin Martyr describe the cross of Jesus as having five extremities rather than four; the fifth was probably the sedile.

Apostles = apostolos {ap-os’-tol-os} from apostello ( {ap-os-tel’-lo} set apart, i.e. (by implication) to send out (properly, on a mission) literally or figuratively:–put in, send (away, forth, out), set (at liberty).) a delegate; specially, an ambassador of the Gospel; officially a commissioner of Christ (“apostle”) (with miraculous powers):– apostle, messenger, he that is sent.

Prophets = prophetes {prof-ay’-tace}; a foreteller (“prophet”); by analogy, an inspired speaker; by extension, a poet:–prophet.

Ephesians 3:5: Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

1 Peter 1:10: Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:

chief corner stone = (stone is not in greek) akrogoniaios {ak-rog-o-nee-ah’-yos ; belonging to the
extreme corner:–chief corner.

This is the only place in the New Testament.

Ephesians 2:21: In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

building= oikodome {oy-kod-om-ay’}; architecture, i.e. (concretely) a structure; figuratively, confirmation:–building, edify(-ication, -ing).

1 Corinthians 3:9: For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.

2 Corinthians 5:1: For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

fitly framed together = sunarmologeo {soon-ar-mol-og-eh’-o} ; to render close-jointed
together, i.e. organize compactly:–be fitly framed (joined) together.

Ephesians 4:16: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Groweth = auzano {owx-an’-o} a prolonged form of a primary verb; to grow (“wax”), i.e.
enlarge (literal or figurative, active or passive):–grow (up), (give the) increase.

1 Corinthians 3:6-7: I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

temple = naos {nah-os’} from a primary naio (to dwell); a fane, shrine, temple :–shrine,
temple.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17: Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

1 Corinthians 6:19: What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

Ephesians 2:22: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Builded together = sunoikodomeo {soon-oy-kod-om-eh’-o} from 4862 and 3618; to construct, i.e. (passively) to compose (in company with other Christians, figuratively):–build together.

Only place found in New Testament.

Habitation = katoiketerion {kat-oy-kay-tay’-ree-on} from a derivative of katoikeo {kat-oy-keh’-o} ; to house permanently, i.e. reside (literally or figuratively):–dwell(-er), inhabitant(-ter). ; a dwelling-place:–habitation.

Jude:1:6: And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Revelation 18:2: And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
