Ephesians 1

Paul briefly visited Ephesus on his second missionary journey as he purposed to go to Jerusalem (Acts 18:19-21). According to Acts 20:31, during his third missionary journey, he remained in Ephesus for three years. The book of Acts mentions several things that happened to Paul in Ephesus: Twelve disciples of John the Baptist were baptized in the Holy Spirit and with Christian water baptism (Acts 19:1-7). Paul preached boldly in the synagogues and taught disciples in the school of Tyrannus (Acts 19:8-10). Many special miracles were done by God through the hands of Paul (Acts 19:11-12). Evil spirits spoke of knowing Paul (Acts 19:13-17). Many practicing magic repented and burned their books and charms (Acts 19:18-20). Paul’s message caused a riot to break out because the worship of the goddess Diana was being forsaken (Acts 19:21-41). Paul spoke to the Ephesian elders and encouraged them to guard, oversee, and feed the church as he visited them for the last time (Acts 20:17-38). Later, in John’s letter to the seven churches of Asia, the Lord rebukes the pastor of the church in Ephesus for leaving his first love (Revelation 2:1-4).

Paul stated three times in this letter that he was a prisoner (Ephesians 3:1, 4:1, and 6:20). Most scholars believe that it was during his imprisonment in Rome that Paul wrote Ephesians , Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. For this reason, these letters are referred to as the Prison Letters.

Ephesians 1:1: Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:

apostle = apostolos {ap-os’-tol-os} from apostello ( {ap-os-tel’-lo} set apart, i.e. (by implication) to send out (properly, on a mission) literally or figuratively:–put in, send (away, forth, out), set (at liberty).) a delegate; specially, an ambassador of the Gospel; officially a commissioner of Christ (“apostle”) (with miraculous powers):– apostle, messenger, he that is sent.

Luke 6:13: And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;

will = thelema {thel’-ay-mah} from thelo ({thel’-o} or ethelo eth-el’-o, in certain tenses theleo thel-eh’-o, and etheleo eth-el-eh’-o, which are otherwise obsolete by implication, to wish, i.e. be inclined to (sometimes adverbially, gladly); impersonally for the future tense, to be about to; by Hebraism, to delight in:–desire, be disposed (forward), intend, list, love, mean, please, have rather, (be) will (have, -ling, – ling(-ly)).) a determination (properly, the thing), i.e. (actively) choice (specially, purpose, decree; abstractly, volition) or (passively) inclination:– desire, pleasure, will.

Found also in Ephesians 1:5: Ephesians 1:9: Ephesians 1:11: Ephesians 5:17: Ephesians 6:6: Ephesians 6:7: See other study for more details on the will of God.

Paul was giving them his authority to come to them and to write to them. His apostleship was not of man, but of Jesus Christ. He was an apostle by the will of God. He was called of God to be an apostle.

saints = hagios {hag’-ee-os} from hagos (an awful thing); sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated):–(most) holy (one, thing), saint.

Found also in Ephesians 1:15: Ephesians 1:18: Ephesians 2:19: Ephesians 3:8: Ephesians 3:18: Ephesians 4:12: Ephesians 5:3: Ephesians 6:18

Ephesians 2:19: Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the
saints, and of the household of God;

faithful = pistos {pis-tos’} from peitho ({pi’-tho} a primary verb; to convince (by argument, true or false); by analogy, to pacify or conciliate (by other fair means); reflexively or passively, to assent (to evidence or authority), to rely (by inward certainty):–agree, assure, believe, have confidence, be (wax) conflent, make friend, obey, persuade, trust, yield.); objectively, trustworthy; subjectively, trustful:–believe(-ing, -r), faithful(-ly), sure, true.

1 Corinthians 4:2: Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

Paul separates the saints and the faithful. There are those who are separated from the world, but others go one step further and become full of faith. These are those who not only are called Christians, but live the life of faith in Jesus so others may see it in everything they do.

Colossians 1:2: To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2Timothy 2:2: And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou
to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

1Timothy 1:12: And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

Ephesians 1:2: Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

grace = charis {khar’-ece} from chairo ( {khah’-ee-ro} a primary verb; to be “cheer”ful, i.e. calmly happy or well-off; impersonally, especially as salutation (on meeting or parting), be well:–farewell, be glad, God speed, greeting, hall, joy(- fully), rejoice.); graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude):–acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace(- ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank(-s, -worthy).

While “grace to you and peace” recall the normal Greek and Hebrew greetings. Paul basically coined a slight variation to connote the deepened Christian truth of grace. Charis (“grace”) goes beyond the typical chairein (“greetings”; see Acts 15:23; 23:26; James 1:1). By doing this he placed the focus on the unmerited blessings given to believers in Christ. Through God’s marvelous grace sinners are delivered from their sins and brought into a saving relationship with a holy God by the work of God on their behalf completely free of charge. This grace does not cease with salvation from sin’s penalty, but continues on as the foundation of the believer’s life with God throughout all eternity. These blessings of grace Paul and his associates wish for their readers.

God gives us grace through Jesus. The only way to have grace is through Jesus. Grace is the gift of the Father given to us through Jesus. All we have is a result of this gift.

Ephesians 2:4-8 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

peace = eirene {i-ray’-nay} probably from a primary verb eiro (to join); peace (literally or
figuratively); by implication, prosperity:–one, peace, quietness, rest, + set at one again.

Ephesians 2:13-16: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

See also study on grace and peace. Paul uses the greeting grace and peace in most of his letters. He also tells us that they come from the Father, via Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 1:3: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

blessed = eulogetos {yoo-log-ay-tos’} from eulogeo ( {yoo-log-eh’-o} to speak well of,
i.e. (religiously) to bless (thank or invoke a benediction upon, prosper):–bless, praise.); adorable:–blessed.

In Hebrew, the root that means “bless” is Berakhah, and the Sages explain that it means “to increase” or “bring down Divine abundance.” When I “bless” you, I am asking God to increase your health, wealth, happiness or whatever it may be, to shine His light on you… in essence, to give you more of Himself.

Romans 4:6-8: Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.

Galatians 3:8-9: And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

Revelation 22:7: Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.

Revelation 22:14: Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

spiritual = pneumatikos {pnyoo-mat-ik-os’} from pneuma {pnyoo’-mah} from pneo {pneh’-o} a primary word; to breathe hard, i.e. breeze:–blow. ; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ’s spirit, the Holy Spirit:–ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind.; non-carnal, i.e. (humanly) ethereal (as opposed to gross), or (daemoniacally) a spirit (concretely), or (divinely) supernatural, regenerate, religious:–spiritual.

language; commendation (“eulogy”), i.e. (reverentially) adoration; religiously,
benediction; by implication, consecration; by extension, benefit or largess:–blessing (a
matter of) bounty (X -tifully), fair speech.

Ephesians 3:10: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

God’s blessings for us come from the heavenlies. We have the privilege to receive from God his blessings, his benefits, his largeness. We give to him our lives which don’t amount to much, and he fills us with his largeness, his blessings, his benefits.

Ephesians 1:4: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

chosen = eklegomai {ek-leg’-om-ahee} middle voice (in its primary sense); to select:–make choice, choose (out), chosen.

2 Thessalonians 2:13: But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

2 Timothy 2:4: No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

James 2:5: Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

Revelation 17:14: These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

World = kosmos {kos’-mos}; orderly arrangement, i.e.decoration; by implication, the world (in a wide or narrow sense, including its inhabitants, literally or figuratively (morally)):–adorning, world.

God chose us..we did not chose him. So often we witness to others to chose Jesus, but here it says he chose us. In other words, we were so dear to him, that he started planning for us before he made the earth. He did all the work. All we need to do is to receive that work, that grace by our faith.

Be holy = hagios {hag’-ee-os} from hagos (an awful thing); sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated):–(most) holy (one, thing), saint.

Romans 11:16: For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.

love-feast:–(feast of) charity(-ably), dear, love.

Found also in Ephesians 2:4: Ephesians 3:17,19: Ephesians 4:2, 16; Ephesians 5:2, 25: Ephesians 5:28: Ephesians 5:33: Ephesians 6:23-24:

Colossians 2:2: That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

1Th:3:12: And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:

God gives to us three things, holiness, blamelessness, and love. We do not deserve any, but he gives all to us through Jesus. When God says be holy as I am holy, he is telling us to receive his holiness for our own. There is not way that we can work up holiness, only receive it as a gift. There is also no way for us to live a blameless life without relying totally on him. Likewise, the only way to love is to get so close to God that his love flows out of our lives into others. We cannot work up any of these, but must rely on God fully for them.

Ephesians 1:5: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

predestinated = proorizo {pro-or-id’-zo}; to limit in advance, i.e.(figuratively) predetermine:–determine before, ordain, predestinate.

Romans 8:29-30: For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

Ephesians 1:11: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

adoption of children = huiothesia {hwee-oth-es-ee’-ah} from a presumed compound of huios ({hwee-os’} apparently a primary word; a “son” (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship:–child, foal, son.); the placing as a son, i.e. adoption (figuratively, Christian sonship in respect to God):–adoption (of children, of sons).

Romans 8:16-17: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Romans 8:21: Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Galatians 3:26: For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

He did not predestine certain people to be born again, but he preplanned the salvation of the world. He planned to have a family even before he created man. His entire reason to create man was to have a family. Adam ended the relationship, so God had to send Jesus to rectify it, so he could have his family back. We are adopted into the family because of Jesus. We have all the same privileges that Jesus had, because we have been adopted into the family.

Good pleasure = eudokia {yoo-dok-ee’-ah}; satisfaction, i.e. (subjectively) delight, or (objectively) kindness, wish, purpose:–desire, good pleasure (will), X Seem good.

Luke 12:32: Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

2 Thessalonians 1:11: Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:

Will = see verse 1

God gets great pleasure out of seeing his will manifest in our lives. The more we accept his will for us, the more his pleasure is.

Ephesians 1:6: To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Praise = epainos {ep’-ahee-nos}; laudation; concretely, a commendable thing:–praise.

Glory = doxa {dox’-ah} from dokeo {dok-eh’-o} a prolonged form of a primary verb, doko dok’-o (used only in an alternate in certain tenses) of the meaning; to think; by implication, to Seem (truthfully or uncertainly): glory (as very apparent), in a wide application (literal or figurative, objective or subjective):–dignity, glory(-ious), honour, praise, worship.

Other places praise of glory is used. Ephesians 1:12: Ephesians 1:14:

Glory found in following.

Ephesians 1:17-18: That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

Ephesians 3:13: Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.

Ephesians 3:16: That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

Ephesians 3:21: Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Grace = see vs 1

We are made accepted by grace. Our being adopted into the family of God brings praise to his glory. Heaven rejoices at those accepting salvation. Our lives being a mirror of God’s love, holiness, and blamelessness brings praise to his glory. We bring authenticity to God in the world.

Made Accepted = charitoo {khar-ee-to’-o} from charis {khar’-ece} (graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act(abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude):–acceptable, benefit, favour,
gift, grace(- ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank(-s, -worthy). ) to grace, i.e. indue with special honor:–
make accepted, be highly favoured.

Luke 1:28: And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Beloved = agapao {ag-ap-ah’-o} perhaps from agan (much); to love (in a social or moral sense):–(be-)love(-ed).

This is the only time that Jesus is listed as the beloved…usually it is a term used for the saints of God. We are made accepted, taken from the trash heap and made highly favored in the work of his beloved son, Jesus. This shows the true love of God. That he loved the world so much he gave his son to die for us.

Ephesians 1:7: In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

redemption = apolutrosis {ap-ol-oo’-tro-sis}; (the act) ransom in full, i.e. (figuratively) riddance, or (specially) Christian salvation:–deliverance, redemption.

Hebrews 9:15: And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

His blood = haima {hah’-ee-mah} of uncertain derivation; blood, literally (of men or animals), figuratively (the juice of grapes) or specially (the atoning blood of Christ); by implication, bloodshed, also kindred:–blood.

Ephesians 2:13: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Ephesians 6:12: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Jesus by his blood brought us redemption. This redemption is not only forgiveness of sin, but includes a lot more. We are set free by his blood. We are sanctified by his blood. We are brought into his family by the blood. The blood being shed is the instrument for our freedom from satan and all his devises. We have victory by the blood.

Forgiveness = aphesis {af’-es-is} (from aphiemi {af-ee’-ay-mee} from hiemi (to send; an intensive form of eimi, to go); to send forth, in various applications (as follow):–cry, forgive, forsake, lay aside, leave, let (alone, be, go, have), omit, put (send) away, remit, suffer, yield up. ); freedom; (figuratively) pardon:–deliverance, forgiveness, liberty, remission.

riches = ploutos {ploo’-tos} (from the base of pletho play’-tho, a prolonged form of a {primary} pleo pleh’-o (which appears only as an alternate i certain tenses and in the reduplicated form pimplemi) to “fill” (literally or figuratively (imbue, influence, supply)); specially, to fulfil (time):– accomplish, full (…come), furnish.); wealth (as fulness), i.e. (literally) money, possessions, or (figuratively) abundance, richness, (specially), valuable
bestowment:–riches.

Colossians 2:2: That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

The forgiveness God gives us is according to the riches of his grace. His grace is abundant. His grace provides every need we have. Our forgiveness is offered by a grace that is over the top. We are not just a sinner saved by grace, but we are given God’s grace which brings his riches to us. He has offered abundance to us just because he wanted to. It does not come to us because of our merit, but because of his.

Ephesians 1:8: Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;

abounded = perisseuo {per-is-syoo’-o} from perissos {per-is-sos’}; (superabundant (in abundantly, advantage, exceedingly, very highly, beyond measure, more, superfluous, vehement(-ly). ); to superabound (in quantity or quality), be in excess, be superfluous; also (transitively) to cause to superabound or excel:–(make, more) abound, (have, have more) abundance (be more) abundant, be the better,enough and to spare, exceed, excel, increase, be left, redound, remain (over and above).

Romans 5:15: But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

Ephesians 3:20: Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

Again it is stressed the abundance that he offers to us. This tells us that the offering that Jesus offered was all that God has.

wisdom = sophia {sof-ee’-ah} from sophos {sof-os’} akin to saphes (clear); wise (in a most general application):–wise. ; wisdom (higher or lower, worldly or spiritual):–wisdom.

1 Corinthians 1:30: But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

1 Corinthians 2:7: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

Ephesians 1:17: That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

Ephesians 3:10: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

Colossians 1:9: For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

Colossians 2:3: In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

James 1:5: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

James 3:17: But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

prudence = phronesis {fron’-ay-sis} from phroneo {fron-eh’-o};( to exercise the mind, i.e. entertain or have a sentiment or opinion; by implication, to be (mentally) disposed (more or less earnestly in
a certain direction); intensively, to interest oneself in (with concern or obedience):–set
the affection on, (be) care(-ful), (be like-, + be of one, + be of the same, + let this) mind(-
ed), regard, savour, think. ); mental action or activity, i.e. intellectual or
moral insight:–prudence, wisdom.

Only one other place this word is used.

Luke 1:17: And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

It says that God gives us all wisdom and prudence…not a measure, but all. Prudence is to have the same mind as God. He wants us to know what he knows for our lives. This is what satan promised Eve and lied about it. God wants us to have that wisdom. But that wisdom is not apart from him. We have to rely on God for our wisdom. When we need wisdom all we have to do is ask, and he gives it to us. God does not want us in the dark with our wisdom. God promises this wisdom to us. Most christians never get close to receiving wisdom, because they do not ask, and they do not believe. When you are studying the bible, ask God for wisdom. He promises here that he will give it. When you need direction in a matter in your life, ask God. He promises here he will give it to you abundantly.

Ephesians 1:9: Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

made known = gnorizo {gno-rid’-zo} from a derivative of ginosko {ghin-oce’-ko} ( a prolonged form of a primary verb; to “know”(absolutely) in a great variety of applications and with many implications (as follow, with others not thus clearly expressed):–allow, be aware (of), feel, (have) know(-ledge), perceived, be resolved, can speak, be sure, understand.); to make known; subjectively, to
know:–certify, declare, make known, give to understand, do to wit, wot.

Mystery = musterion {moos-tay’-ree-on} from a derivative of muo (to shut the mouth); a
secret or “mystery” (through the idea of silence imposed by initiation into religious rites):–mystery.

Found also in Ephesians 3:3-4; Ephesians 3:9: Ephesians 5:32: Ephesians 6:19

Will = see verse 1

So many people say that they do not know the will of God for their lives. But it says here that God has made that known to us. If you don’t know his will for your life, realize that it is promised here. Ask God and he will let you know what you are to do for him. He usually does not give you every part of his will for the rest of your life at one time because it would be too much for you, but he wants us to know what his will is for us each day of our life. The main will of God for your life is to know the mystery of the gospel…the saving knowledge of Christ Jesus. The mystery of his will is explained in the following verses.

good pleasure = see verse 5

purposed = protithemai {prot-ith’-em-ahee}; to place before, i.e. (for oneself) to exhibit; (to oneself) to propose (determine):–purpose, set forth.

God’s will is his good pleasure. It is what he has set forth in Jesus. Jesus is God’s will for your life.

Ephesians 1:10: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

dispensation = oikonomia {oy-kon-om-ee’-ah} from oikonomos {oy-kon-om’-os}(; a house-distributor (i.e. manager), or overSeer, i.e. an employee in that capacity; by extension, a fiscal agent (treasurer); figuratively, a preacher (of the Gospel):–chamberlain, governor, steward. ); administration (of a household or estate); specially, a (religious) “economy”:–dispensation, stewardship.

1 Corinthians 9:17: For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.

Ephesians 3:2: If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:

Colossians 1:25: Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;

fulness = pleroma {play’-ro-mah}; repletion or completion, i.e. (subjectively) what fills (as contents, supplement, copiousness, multitude), or (objectively) what is filled (as container, performance, period):–which is put in to fill up, piece that filled up, fulfilling, full, fulness.

Times = kairos {kahee-ros’} of uncertain affinity; an occasion, i.e. set or proper time:–X always, opportunity, (convenient, due) season, (due, short, while) time, a while.

God has been in control of the times. Dispensation is management. God has managed the times in the past, and He is also now managing the times. He knows when the fulness of times is to be. He has the time in control. He does not say that he has the world in control. He gave the world to man. We need to pray for him to sway the minds of the leaders of the world, so that they will do his will and not satan’s will until that end of times comes. Notice all the verbs up to this point were in the past tense. Now it is future.

Might gather together in one = anakephalaiomai {an-ak-ef-al-ah’-ee-om-ahee}; to sum up:–briefly comprehend, gather together in one.

Joh:11:52: And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

Heaven = ouranos {oo-ran-os’} perhaps from the same as 3735 (through the idea of elevation); the sky; by extension, heaven (as the abode of God); by implication, happiness, power, eternity; specially, the Gospel (Christianity):–air, heaven(-ly), sky.

earth = ge {ghay} contracted from a primary word; soil; by extension a region, or the solid part or the whole of the terrene globe (including the occupants in each application):–country, earth(-ly), ground, land, world.

Ephesians 3:15: Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
Ephesians 4:10: He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

He promises here that he will in the fulness of time gather together heaven and earth. God has a future for you and it is glorious. He wants heaven and earth to be one. That is why Jesus said to pray, thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. God wants his kingdom on earth more than man does.

Ephesians 1:11: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

Colossians 1:12: Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

Colossians 3:24: Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

Hebrews 1:4: Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

Hebrews 9:15: And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Hebrews 11:8: By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

1 Peter 1:4: To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

We have obtained the inheritance through the death of Jesus. Jesus not only died to give us an inheritance, but he is now the mediator of the new testament. He is working in heaven on our behalf. This inheritance is an eternal inheritance. This inheritance is incorruptible. This inheritance is the kingdom of God.

predestinated = see verse 5

purpose = prothesis {proth’-es-is} from protithemai {prot-ith’-em-ahee} ( to place
before, i.e. (for oneself) to exhibit; (to oneself) to propose (determine):–purpose, set
forth. ); a setting forth, i.e. (figuratively) proposal (intention); specially, the show-bread (in the Temple) as exposed before God:–purpose, shew(-bread).

Hebrews 9:2: For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.

Ephesians 3:11: According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

The word purpose here is the same word translated shewbread other places.
In Leviticus 24:5 we read: “And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth parts shall be in one cake. And thou shalt set them in two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before the LORD. And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon each row, that it may be on the BREAD [“lechem”] for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto the LORD. Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the LORD continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant. And it shall be Aaron’s and his sons; and they shall eat it in the holy place; for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of the LORD made by fire by a perpetual statute” (Lev. 24:5-9).
This showbread was, literally, “bread of the Presence.” It consisted of twelve loaves of wheat bread, corresponding to the twelve tribes of Israel. It was placed on the table of the showbread, on the north side of the Temple, in front oft the Holy of Holies, opposite the lamp stand containing the seven lamps. It was placed on the bale every Sabbath, arranged in two rows of six loaves each, with each loaf piled on top of another. When the new loaves were placed on the table, the week-old loaves were taken off the table, and eaten by the priests in the Holy Place, or Sanctuary.
God preplanned redemption. He told about the promise of his presence in the shewbread. Here he tells us that his presence in us was preplanned. We are the shewbread of God. We are to show forth his presence in us. Jesus said he is the bread of life. When Jesus is in us, we are the shewbread of God.

worketh = energeo {en-erg-eh’-o} from energes {en-er-gace’} (active, operative:–effectual,

any, every, the whole:–all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.

Counsel = boule {boo-lay’} from boulomai {boo’-lom-ahee} (middle voice of a primary verb; to “will,” i.e.(reflexively) be willing:–be disposed, minded, intend, list, (be, of own) will (-ing).); volition, i.e. (objectively) advice, or (by implication) purpose:–+ advise, counsel, will.

Acts 2:23: Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

Hebrews 6:17: Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

will = see verse 1

The working of the cross was God’s will for you. He wanted a family and he worked, made it effectual, through the death and resurrection of Jesus. He wanted his presence to be in his people, and the only way to do it was to send Jesus to die in our place so that we may have the presence of God in us.

Ephesians 1:12: That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

Praise of glory = see verse 6

first trusted = proelpizo {pro-el-pid’-zo}; to hope in advance of other confirmation:–first trust.

Only place first trusted is found in the New Testament. When we first trust, rely on the hope of the gospel, we are the praise of his glory. God is praised and glorified when we trust in what he will do for us in the future as well as believing what he has done for us in the past.

Ephesians 1:13: In whom ye also (trusted), after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

trusted = not in the greek

heard = akouo {ak-oo’-o} a primary verb; to hear (in various senses):–give (in the) audience (of), come (to the ears), (shall) hear(-er, -ken), be noised, be reported, understand.

Romans 10:10: For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

The gospel of salvation is the word of truth. The gospel of salvation or the word of truth must first be heard. Salvation does not only give us deliverance from sin, but it also gives us deliverance from satan, and all he brings. It gives us health, or deliverance from illness. This is the truth of the word. It is good news to all that hear it.

Believed = pisteuo {pist-yoo’-o} from pistis {pis’-tis}; (persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance
upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the

2 Timothy 1:12: For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

After is said twice. First it is said after we heard, and then after we believed. Faith comes by hearing God’s word. Man needs to hear the word or the gospel in order to believe.

sealed = sphragizo {sfrag-id’-zo} from sphragis {sfrag-ece’} ( a signet (as fencing in
or protecting from misappropriation); by implication, the stamp impressed (as a mark of

Acts 2:33: Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

When you are saved, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise. A seal was a stamp in wax proving that a letter was officially from the owner of the seal. The Holy Spirit is that seal. The Holy Spirit’s presence is what makes us the shewbread of God. His presence in us is our seal of approval from God. His presence shows us that we are God’s purchased possession. His presence in us is the seal that all God promised for us will come to pass.

Ephesians 1:14: Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Earnest = arrhabon {ar-hrab-ohn’} of Hebrew origin; a pledge, i.e. part of the purchase-money or property given in advance as security for the rest:–earnest.

Colossians 1:12: Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

Hebrews 1:4: Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

1 Peter 1:4: To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

The Holy Spirit sealing us is the down payment on our inheritance. What we have in the Holy Spirit being within us is a taste of the glory to come. We have the Holy Spirit’s presence as a guarantee that we will receive the entire inheritance from God.

redemption = see verse 7

purchased possession = peripoiesis {per-ee-poy’-ay-sis} from peripoieomai {per-ee-poy-eh’-om-ahee; to make around oneself, i.e. acquire (buy):–purchase; acquisition (the act or the thing); by extension, preservation:–obtain(-ing), peculiar, purchased, possession, saving.

1 Peter 2:9: But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Until the redemption of the purchased possession must be referring to the redemption of our body which is the fulness of the redemption. We are the purchased possession of God. The Holy Spirit proves that we are owned by God. Jesus’ death purchased the redemption.

Praise of glory = see verse 6

We are the praise of his glory. When we accept the work of Jesus we become God’s praise. Our whole lives show his praise and glory.

James 5:16: Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

This prayer in the next several verses was Paul’s reaction to hearing of their faith and love. This shows us a prayer that Paul had for those that have believed and are walking in love. Paul emphasized that his prayers were a result of their faith and love. We should concentrate our prayers on those who are in faith and love. So often we feel that we should do most of our praying for the lost, but most of our prayers should be for those in faith and love. If you study the prayers of the New Testament, most of them are for the saints, not for sinners. If we pray for the saints to show forth the example of Jesus Christ, the sinners will be saved.

Paul said that he did not cease, or stop. This is one prayer we are instructed to pray over and over. This is a prayer of God’s wisdom and guidance in our lives. Paul said to give thanks first, and then mentioned them in prayers. Thanksgiving is a very important part of prayer. He then goes on in the next verses telling them what he was praying for them.
