The Lord’s Prayer Series D. The Petition of Prayer

Matthew:6:9 After this manner therefore pray you: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Lu:11:2: And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

Hallowed be thy name

The word hallowed only appears in the New Testament twice. The word in the Greek is translated in other places 26 times as sanctify. So this means sanctify thy great name. It is always used in the Bible to show the opposite of profane. Hallowed means that God is set apart from all evil that may be in your life. He is not set apart from us because he sent his son to bridge that gap between him and us. Our Father is not causing the evil that is in our life. He is apart from the profane that is in our life.

Most of the time that you see hallowed or sanctify in the Old Testament you also see the word profane.

Leviticus 22:32 Neither shall you profane my holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the LORD which hallow you,

God wants to set us apart from the evil that is in our lives.

Ephesians:2:6: And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

He not only resides in heaven, but also has placed us there in Christ. We are set apart along with Jesus. So when we speak out hallowed be his name, we are declaring that because we are in Christ we are also separated from the evil.

Philippians:3:20: For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ:

We need to have a conversation of heaven. We need to separate our tongue from the world as well.

Philippians:2:10: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

God’s name is hallowed because of the work of Jesus on the cross. As we speak his name into our lives every evil thing must bow to that name.

John17:9-11:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.10: And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.11: And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

In these words hallowed be thy name we give glory to God; as that, the Lord be magnified, or glorified, for God’s holiness is the greatness and glory of all his perfections. We must begin our prayers with praising God, giving glory to God, before we expect to receive mercy and grace from him.

Matthew 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Lu:11:2: And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

This verse starts the part of the prayer that is called a petition. The first and last part of the Lord’s prayer is a prayer of praise and worship. Petition means a request. They asked Jesus how to pray, and he filled most of the prayer with asking.

1. He wants us to ask.

Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. Don’t feel you are being selfish to ask, because this is how Jesus taught us to pray.

John 14, 15 and 16 are what Jesus taught at the Last Supper. Here he teaches about asking.

John:14:13-14 13 And whatsoever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.14: If you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

John:15:7: If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you.

John:16:23-24 23 And in that day you shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. 24: Hitherto have you asked nothing in my name: ask, and you shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Then right before he gives the Lord’s prayer in Matthew, he tells them to ask the Father.

Matthew 6:8: Be not you therefore like unto them: for your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask him.

This does not say, Your Father knows what things you have need of so don’t ask.

Matthew 7:7-11 7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?

10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

It is all through the Lord’s prayer to ask.

Give us; lead us; forgive us; deliver us.

But it all comes through a filter. He says over and over to ask in his name. Verse 10 gives the filter. We ask in order that his kingdom comes, and not ours. We are asking for his will to be done, and not ours.

1Jo:5:14-15 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he hears us:15And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

We know that we have the petitions we ask of God, because as we focus on God he changes our desires. His kingdom becomes first place. We begin to desire what He desires. We look for his kingdom to come into our lives.

It is all about him, his kingdom and his will. This must be first place before we ask. But asking is important.

James:4:2: you lust, and have not: you kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: you fight and war, yet you have not, because you ask not.

You can sum up the Lord’s prayer with two words…praise and ask.

2. His Kingdom is Here.

Matthew 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

It is not praying for the second return. The tense of this verb in the Greek is the imperfect tense which means the kingdom has come, is here now with results also in the future.

Matthew 4:17: From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Mark1:14-15 14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent you, and believe the gospel.

Matthew12:28: But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

Matthew10:7: And as you go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

The reason that Jesus said the kingdom was there or at hand, is that the king was there. The kingdom has already come because king Jesus has already come. Kingdom means the kings dominion. The kingdom is on earth, but is it in your heart?

Luke 17:20-21 20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God comes not with observation: 21Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

Jesus is saying here, Thy kingdom has come but also continues to come. When we got saved we gave Jesus dominion or kingship, but is he king today? When you get up tomorrow will he be king?

3. His will is best

Matthew 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

1Thessalonians:5:18: In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

We know we are supposed to do the will of God but how do we do it?

John 7:17: If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

If I will to do God’s will, I am going to understand the doctrine, the Bible. The key is we have to will to do his will. That is why it is so important to pray “Thy will be done.” When we pray this we are saying that our knowledge is nothing compared to his understanding of what we are praying about. We are then submitting our will to God’s will. And we have an excellent example of this kind of prayer.

Luke22:42: Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

God created us in his image, with a will just as he has a will. You will have a choice every day whether you will serve God and put him first place in your life. You have a choice to read the Bible on a daily basis. You have a choice whether you are going to tithe or not. You have a choice whether you are going to control your thoughts or not. You have a choice whether you chose to dwell on a thought that pops into your head or to go to prayer and overcome it. When a thought comes into your mind, you can either quote the word of God to remove it or you can pray for the purity of yourself.

This is the filter that before we pray give us, give us, give us, we pray thy kingdom, thy will.

1Jo:5:14-15 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he hears us:15And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

What is in heaven can be in your life on earth. God wants your loved ones to be saved.

1 Timothy 2:1-4 1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

God’s will is for all men to be saved. Too many times we pray for God to be saved. But we are praying in error, for God has already done the work of salvation. It is his gift.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

We need to pray for them to receive the gift. How do we do that?

Romans 10: 14-17 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

We need to pray for people to come across their paths to tell them about Jesus. That is how the faith will come and they will receive the gift of salvation that God has already given.

Matthew 9:38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest.

Luke 10:2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest.

The second thing we need to do in our prayer for the unsaved is take authority over the devil. He will try to blind their mind to the gospel.

1 Corinthians 4: 3-6 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Are you going to let the king rule in your life? God knows best. It is important to ask for his will in everything we do. Ask for God’s will to be done in your family’s life. Ask for God’s will to be done in the lives of these we are praying for salvation for.

We want the king to have dominion. He knows best. We need to say not my will but thy will be done. He always knows what is best for your life. We need to submit to that will. He offers protection when we are walking in his will.
