Harmony of the gospels, miracles of Jesus Part 3

Last week we studied the two most promonent people that were delivered from demons: the man in the synagogue of Capernaum and the man in the tombs of the country of the Gadarenes. There were many more people delivered from demons.

Mark:1:34: And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.

Matthew:8:16: When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

Luke:4:41: And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

Today, we are going to give several more examples of those delivered in the ministry of Jesus. We are going to start with a teaching of Jesus on deliverance first.

Matthew:7:13-29 13: Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16: Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17: Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18: A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19: Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20: Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22: Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23: And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24: Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26: And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. 28: And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: 29: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Here Jesus is telling the multitudes about the way to get to heaven and warns about false prophets. The people were amazed at his teaching, just as they were when he taught in Capernaum and then delivered the demon possessed man.
The reason given was that he taught with authority.
There are some things to notice in this teaching he gives on false prophets.
1. They may look like sheep, but inside are wolves
2. You shall know them by their fruit…not their power.
3. They will say Lord, Lord, and prophecy, cast out demons and do wonderful works, but are workers of iniquity.
4. They are a foolish man because they hear Jesus sayings, but don’t do them.

This shows that there were people that cast out devils, and were not followers of Jesus. There was a saying that the Jews believed that only the Messiah could cast out a devil from a dumb man because those who cast out devils always asked the name of the devil, before they could cast it out. So when Jesus did what the multitudes thought only the Messiah was able to do, there was a very strong reaction.

Dumb Delivered, Jesus Declared to be the Devil

Matthew :9:32-34 32: As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. 33: And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. 34: But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.

The multitudes marveled because they had never seen such a thing. But the Pharisees wanted to discredit Jesus as the Messiah, so they said that Jesus did it in the power of the devil, and not God.

Matthew said this happened again when someone had a devil that kept him from speaking and was blind as well.

Matthew:12:22-37 22: Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. 23: And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? 24: But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. 25: And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: 26: And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? 27: And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. 28: But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. 29: Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. 30: He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. 31: Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32: And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. 33: Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. 34: O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35: A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36: But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37: For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Luke:11:14-28 14: And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. 15: But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. 16: And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. 17: But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. 18: If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. 19: And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. 20: But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. 21: When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: 22: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. 23: He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. 24: When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. 25: And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. 26: Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. 27: And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28: But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Mark:3:22-30: 22 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.23: And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? 24: And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25: And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26: And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. 27: No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. 28: Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: 29: But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: 30: Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.

Who is Beelzebub? The Pharisees and scribes call him the prince of the devils. The word means literally “Baal or Lord of the Flies”; is a Semitic deity that was worshiped in the Philistine city of Ekron. The word was originally Beelzebul (‘Lord of demons’) but was corrupted deliberately in Syrian texts and the Vulgate to Beelzebub (‘Lord of flies’) as a gesture of contempt. In Biblical sources he appears as a demon and the name of one of the seven princes of Hell. He is mentioned first in Second Kings.

2 Kings:1:1-18 1: Then Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab. 2: And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease. 3: But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron? 4: Now therefore thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Elijah departed. 5: And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back? 6: And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that thou sendest to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. 7: And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words? 8: And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite. 9: Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down. 10: And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty. 11: Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly. 12: And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty. 13: And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight. 14: Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight. 15: And the angel of the LORD said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king. 16: And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. 17: So he died according to the word of the LORD which Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram reigned in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no son. 18: Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

Then Jesus tells them two things prove he was not casting out demons by Beelzebub.
1. How can a kingdom be divided against itself and stand? He is showing first of all the utter error of their statements. There would be no way for any kingdom that cast out its own army, to be able to keep going. John:10:21: Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?
2. He said that they were casting out devils, and they had said they were doing it in the name of the Lord. Remember what he said in Matthew 9 about them saying they did it in his name. Therefore if they accused him of doing it in the devil’s name they were doing it also.

Then he goes on and proves that they are not casting the devils out in the name of the Lord. Luke tells us that he said they were not casting out demons in the name of the Lord, because the devils came back.

Luke 11:24: When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. 25: And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. 26: Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

And finally Jesus warns them that because they were attributing the casting out of a devil to Satan, they were in danger of eternal judgment, because they were blaspheming the Holy Spirit. Both Matthew and Mark state this.

Matthew 12;31-37 31: Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

Syrophenician’s daughter delivered.

Last timr we studied two deliverance stories, on for a Jew and one for a Gentile. Today we are studying the same again. Jesus healed the dumb man which would have been a Jew, because otherwise Pharisees and scribes would not have been there. It could have been this deliverance was in a synagogue. But here, we are told Jesus spoke to a Gentile about deliverance for her daughter.

Matthew:15:21-28 21: Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.22: And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. 23: But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.24: But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25: Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. 26: But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs. 27: And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. 28: Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

Mark:7:24-30 24: And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid. 25: For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet: 26: The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. 27: But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. 28: And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs. 29: And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. 30: And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

Tyre and Sidon were coastal cities in the ancient area of Phoenicia, which is modern Lebanon. Tyre has had a profound effect on the history of civilization. Tyre was a maritime power in the Mediterranean and was known as “Queen of the Sea.” Around the 700 BC, Phoenician traders began to expand their trade. In turn this expansion led the Tyre establishing colonies around the Mediterranean such as Carthage and as far west as Spain. They traded first with wood, metals, salves, wine, and glass, but one of its trades it was known for, was its rare purple dyes which were used primarily by royalty as it was so costly. It was the purple dye that gave the Phoenicians their name as Phoenician means “purple people,” originating from the Greek word “phoinios” meaning “purple.” It is said that the alphabet into Greece was attributed to Cadmus of Tyre. The sister of Cadmus was named Europa and which it is believed that the continent was named. It there prowess on the seas and in trade that made them such a great match for King David and King Solomon, and the building of the Temple. Hiram the king of Tyre was a close friend of King David, and he sent over cedars for the building of his home (2 Samuel 5:11). He also gave Solomon cedars for the Temple. (1 Kings 9:11)

Tyre was continuously attacked by nation and empire; the Persians, the Romans, the Greeks, the Crusaders, and Arabs. The Phoenicians were defeated by Cyrus the Great and Tyre was created one of the four vassal kingdoms of the Empire. Under the Persians, the Tyre was known for furnishing ships. The unsuccessful thirteen-year siege by Nebuchadnezzar and the brilliant military destruction of Tyre by Alexander were common knowledge.

Sidon was famed as a fishing center and for its glasswork and its dyes of purple.

Jesus not only went to Tyre and Sidon, but mentioned them in comparison to Israel.

Matthew:11:21-22 21: Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22: But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

Luke:10:13-14 13: Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14: But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.

Apparently this miracle was the only one he did there in the area of Tyre and Sidon. He did do miracles for more people from that area, but this is the only one recorded as being done while there.

Luke:6:17-19 17: And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;18: And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.19: And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

Now let’s examine the woman. First it is told that she was a woman of Canaan. She was a Greek and a Syrophenician by nation. So she was a resident of the area which he was in. She was not a Jew, but approached him like she was.

Matthew 15:22 Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David;

Apparently, she had heard others say this when Jesus healed them, so she was hoping he would help her if she said the same thing to him. It is seen by Jesus’ response that she was not a believing Gentile. He did not answer her. He did not acknowledge what she said. She must have said it over and over, for the disciples told Jesus to send her away. Jesus responded to them with, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. He is telling his disciples that he could not heal her because of her approach to him. He was saying that he was sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, not a Greek Gentile woman pretending to be a Jew. Remember he had already delivered the Gentile man in the country of the Gadarenes. So he is not saying he would not heal a Gentile, but he was trying to get her to tell the truth.

Now she does change her tune..Matthew 15:25 she worships him, and says “Lord, help me”. Jesus realizes she is now sincere in her request, but still was calling him Lord. She still was trying to be a good Jew. She did not say Teacher, but Lord.

Jesus does something that seems very hard. But it was to get her into faith. He called her a dog. Jews did not have a very high standard of dogs. They called Gentiles, dogs because they did not like them.
But Jesus may have been referring to Proverbs here.

Proverb:26:10-12 10: The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors. 11: As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.12: Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

He realized she was being foolish in pretending to be a Jew in order to get deliverance for her daughter, and he had to shake her up in order to get her into faith.
Mark 7:27: But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

Jesus again suggests to the woman that the children of Israel were to have healing first. He was telling her that in order for her to receive the miracle, she had to be a believer, not an unbelieving Gentile.

Her answer caught the attention of Jesus. Both Mark and Matthew say the same thing here, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.

This is the third time she called Jesus Lord. But apparently it is the first time she really meant it. Because she followed it with master. She finally got that Jesus was not just a nobleman, but had to be her master as well. She has now proclaimed her faith. She knew what Jesus was saying was Truth. Jesus’ response is very notable.

Matthew 15:28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt

Jesus did not say she just had faith, but great faith, and that faith brought in the miracle she was wanting. He knew now that she realized he was Lord and master. She knew that he could and would deliver her daughter. So she was able to go home in anticipation that what Jesus had said was the truth.

She had done what Paul instructs us to do.

Ephesians :6:11-13 11: Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.12: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13: Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

So we have learned here that no matter whether Jew or Greek, all must come to Jesus in faith. Faith is what brings in the answer to our lives, just as faith brought deliverance to this woman’s daugher.

Luke:10:20: Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

To show how important faith is lets look at what Jesus said to his disciples when they were trying to cast out a devil, and they were not in faith.

Matthew:17:14-21 14: And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, 15: Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. 16: And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. 17: Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18: And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19: Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20: And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21: Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

Mark 9:17-29 17: And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; :18: And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. 19: He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. 20: And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21: And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. 22: And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. 23: Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 24: And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. 25: When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. 26: And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. 27: But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose. 28: And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? 29: And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

Luke:9:37-43 37: And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. 38: And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. 39: And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. 40: And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not. 41: And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. 42: And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. 43: And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God.

Notice that in all three gospels, Jesus said the disciples could not cast out the devils because of their unbelief. It is very important for us to be in faith when we come before the Father with our requests.

As Hebrews 11:6 says, But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

And we will end with this…

2 Timothy:4:18: And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
